Nancy Cartwright is a philosopher of science, and professor of philosophy at the University of California at San Diego and the University of Durham. She is identified with the “Stanford school” of philosophy of science (also associated with John Dupré and Patrick Suppes among others), which places emphasis on scientific practice and shuns abstract theorising.
Her recent work vaunts scientific evidence as a key factor in sensible policymaking, as outlined in Evidence Based Policy: A Practical Guide to Doin it Better.

“[Cartwright] is concerned with how actual science achieves the successes it does.” ~ Carl Hoefer
