Matthew Syed is a columnist for The Times, an acclaimed author and a former Olympian. He competed and was the English number one table tennis player for many years. Syed is a three-time men's singles champion at the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships, and also competed for Great Britain in two Olympic Games.

During his sporting career, Syed entered journalism, and later became a writer.
