"Madhyamaka denies the existence of anything that is independent, self-sufficient, or intrinsically existent.'
Jan Westerhoff is a professor of Buddhist philosophy at Oxford University. His research looks at the philosophical aspects of the religious traditions of ancient India. He focuses on the Madhyamaka school of Budhism and also on contemporary analytic philosophy (mainly on metaphysics).
His books such as Nagarjuna’s Madhyamaka (2009), The Golden Age of Indian Buddhist Philosophy (2018), and notably The Non-Existence of the Real World (2020) challenge widespread assumptions in Western metaphysics about substance, intrinsic nature, and the foundations of reality.
“Jan Westerhoff’s most recent monograph is a densely argued and highly systematic attempt to undermine a number of realist convictions.” — Sean M. Smith, review of The Non-Existence of the Real World, Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews
