"We cannot defeat climate change without trade. And we cannot sustain trade without addressing climate change."

James Bacchus is a professor of Global Affairs and Director of the Global Economic and Environmental Opportunity Centre at the University of Central Florida. With a long and storied career in Congress and the World Trade Organisation (WTO), his most recent work argues that we need global democracy in order to have true, sustainable development.

James was elected to the House of Representatives in 1991, where he served before becoming a trade negotiator for the US. He later went on to be the founding judge and twice chairman of the Appellate Body of the WTO, the highest tribunal of world trade, where he judged more trade disputes than anyone else in the world. He has since served on the leadership council for the US's chapter to the Paris Climate Accords, has written several books, among many more positions and accolades.
