"An economic crisis in a developing country is very different from a crisis in a rich economy."

Stefan Dercon is Professor of Economic Policy at Oxford University and Director of the Centre for the Study of African Economies. His ground-breaking research focusses on what keeps people and countries poor: the failures of markets, governments and politics, mainly in Africa, and how to achieve change. He was previously Chief Economist of the UK's Department of International Development.

"Brilliant, witty and waspish" - Duncan Green
