The Misdiagnosed Mind: Depression Through The Ages

Joanna Moncrieff
Join Joanna Moncrieff as she traces the history of mental distress – from its origins in supernatural explanation, to the emergence of biological and psychological models in the early 20th century, to the age of mass diagnosis and medication we inhabit today. Professor of Critical and Social Psychiatry at University College London and author of the landmark systematic review that upended the serotonin theory of depression, Moncrieff’s groundbreaking research makes the case for why medicine needs to develop a richer and more honest framework for understanding mental suffering.

Part 1: The History of Mental Distress: Mental distress through the ages: how the past continues to shape the way we think about the mind.

Part 2: Thinking Differently – A New Framework for Mental Health: Moncrieff looks beyond the chemical model to ask what a truly honest response to mental suffering might demand of us.

"Moncrieff explains both the scientific flaws and the deliberate manipulations underlying much of today’s psychiatric ideology and treatment." — Gabor Maté
