Reality in the Age of Perspective

Steve Fuller, Sally Haslanger, Jimmy Wales. Philip Collins hosts
Today it is commonplace to describe our outlook as "my truth", "my lived experience". As if to recognise the radically subjective character of all outlooks. Yet at the same time, the majority also wish to hold onto some aspects of reality that are seen as unchallengeable. Core political beliefs, about injustice or oppression, are held not to be perspectives but undeniable insights. Critics argue this partial perspectivalism is incoherent and self-serving. They argue different cultures and different individuals do not hold different perspectives on a single reality, but live in different realities. One culture's freedom fighter is another culture's terrorist. The same is true in science. As Thomas Kuhn demonstrated, a new paradigm does not simply apply a new theory, but alters what are identified as the facts.

Should we conclude that we don't share a reality but instead operate in different realities? Can we never make contact with reality as it truly is? Or must it be the case that we can gain insight into how things ultimately are, even if only from a particular point of view?

Founder of Wikipedia Jimmy Wales, post-truth philosopher Steve Fuller, and pioneer of feminist social theory Sally Haslanger debate whether we all live in different realities.
