Michael Wooldridge is a leading computer scientist and the Ashall Professor of Foundations of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Oxford, where he also services as Head of the Department of Computer Science. He is known for his pioneering work on multi-agent systems: systems composed of multiple self-interested intelligent agents that can cooperate, negotiate, and tackle complex problems. Having researched the field for decades, he is one of the world’s foremost authorities on AI.
He was awarded the prestigious Michael Faraday Prize by the Royal Society in late 2025 – awarded for excellence in science communication, and previously won by figures including David Attenborough. His book The Road to Conscious Machines offers an authoritative guide to AI past and present bringing “a healthy injection of humility to an overhyped field.”
