"Our job is to communicate the complexity and the many contradictions you get in China to a foreign audience, and that is much harder when there are fewer of us."

Yuan Yang is the Europe-China correspondent for the Financial Times. She was previously the Beijing bureau chief and spent five years reporting within China. She began her career as a Marjorie Dean intern writing about economics for The Economist.

Alongside her journalism career, Yuan is the co-founder of Rethinking Economics, a charity that aims to widen the economics curriculum within school and university.

"With her unique vantage point, courageous reporting and deep understanding of inequality,...Yuan Yang is a major talent." Bloomsbury
