Vivienne Shue is Emeritus Professor of Contemporary China Studies at Oxford University. Specialising in Chinese politics and society, local governance and patterns of state-society interaction, she is known for her book The Reach of the State: Sketches of the Chinese Body Politic, which upended scholarly consensus by arguing that Mao's government in fact exerted relatively little authority in the peasant countryside, where resistance was surprisingly rich.
