Jamie Whyte is a libertarian political philosopher, management consultant, and the former leader of ACT New Zealand, a free market party.
Whyte studied at the universities of Auckland and Cambridge, developing an approach to economics and public policy in the tradition of Austrian liberal economist Friedrich Hayek. He is the author of Quack Policy, a monograph challenging state regulators' appeal to scientific fact to justify initiatives such as smoking bans and environmental taxes. In 2014, despite holding no previous political experience, Whyte was elected to the leadership of ACT New Zealand and went on to unsuccessfully contest the Pakuranga electorate.
