"My interest in politics and decision to become a politician came from a desire to care for people and make life fairer."

Clare Short is a Labour Party politician, and former MP for Birmingham and Ladywood from 1983 to 2010. She was Secretary of State for International Development in Tony Blair's Cabinet for six years until her resignation in 2003. Short stood down as an MP in the 2010 general election. Short's book An Honourable Deception?: New Labour, Iraq, and the Misuse of Power, published a year after the UK's invasion of Iraq, detailed Short's experience of government and the relationship between Blair and Gordon brown in the lead-up to the Iraq War, which Short vehemently opposed.

Since leaving Parliament, Short has devoted her attention to issues including urbanisation, climate change, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
