Just five weeks until HowTheLightGetsIn lands in Hay, and we've a host of new experiences for you at what is shaping up to be our best festival yet.
Opening onto a glorious stretch of the River Wye, our greatly expanded Riverside site hosts the festival with more venues than ever before. Twelve stages for music, comedy and debates through the day include new interactive Hat sessions, a dedicated Open Platform tent to dine with speakers, a Blue Moon acoustic tent, and an expanded Stage venue that stretches along the river with music and cabaret. A new Arena hosts our biggest debates and headline bands from the legendary Donovan to double Mercury prize and Brit Award nominee Anna Calvi. And with dancing and music in the Hat, the People's Front Room, the Waterfront and Riverside Disco, the late night party is going to be bigger than ever before.
And that's not all. We've a whole range of new gourmet delights at the Waterfront and the Fayre with a brand new Market featuring artisan food, cocktail bars, vintage clothing, and workshops, along with an expanded Spa in Bohemia and so much more. Check out the details here.
We can't wait!
There's so much more to HowTheLightGetsIn than Debates & Talks...
Launching today, the Kanga Spa is a haven of warmth and wellbeing tucked away from the festival hustle and bustle, where you'll be treated to outdoor yoga, professional massage therapies, chakra dance sessions, and a wealth of classes, workshops, and treatments. It's the perfect way to unwind in between the day's dancing and debating.
And that's not all. You can dine and discuss ideas with the world's leading thinkers at our Open Platform sessions; dance by the river all day and all night with award wining party extraordinaires Alfresco Disco; enjoy a decadent four-course long table banquet in the glorious Waterfront Bar and Kitchen; mix wine-tasting with philosophy as part of our new programme of experiential talks; catch your favourite speakers in the Bookshop's Champagne Bar; and so much more...
We're excited to announce that we've partnerred with Aeon Magazine to curate the programme for HowTheLightGetsIn 2019 around the theme of Tribal Truths and New Wisdoms. Each of these debates explores an unquestioned belief of a particular group — the tribal truths — and proposes a new way forward.
As we countdown to the festival, we’ve teamed up to curate this collection of some of the magazine’s most daring essays. Each essay links to a debate programmed for HowTheLightGetsIn Festival 2019.
HowTheLightGetsIn Hay 2019 looks set to be our most intellectually vibrant festival yet, and we hope the following essays in this special Aeon Edition — designed for offline reading — will whet your appetite for the daring discussions to come…

HowTheLightGetsIn is back for another year. We’ll be releasing the first batch of tickets this Thursday, and we’re not expecting them to be around for long. Until then, we’d like to reward our previous ticket holders by offering priority access to tickets before they go on sale to the public. If you’ve been to the festival before, it’s worth checking your inbox for our newsletter to find out how you can access your exclusive offer. You’ll have to be quick; the offer will end on Wednesday at midnight.
This year, we’ll be shaking things up a bit and expanding our Riverside site, stretching even further along the banks of the charming river Wye. We’ll be back with all of the big ideas, the show-stopping performances and late night parties you’ve come to expect, but this time you’ll have even more energy to dance into the night with everything just a stroll away.
Get ready this Thursday to join the philosophy and music festival that will get you thinking. Earlybird tickets will go on general sale at 12pm, and when they’re gone, they’re gone!
London, you were incredible. Thank you to everyone who joined us at HowTheLightGetsIn. With our weekend tickets selling out, our London debut was a huge success and we can’t wait to storm the capital again next year. We loved our new site and its incredible backdrop which complimented the day’s events. Keep an eye out for festival highlights on our social media channels, and we’d love for you to share your experience with us too.
Now, we look forward to returning to Hay-on-Wye for the full festival experience. Join us in May, 2019, where we’ll be bringing 4 days of debate, music, comedy and performance to the beautiful town of Hay-on-Wye. We saw lots of new shiny faces in London and we hope to see you in our countryside setting. Bring your brains charged, your dancing shoes, and probably some wellies too. Take advantage of our earlybird prices and have your May bank holiday sorted.
We’ll be announcing our festival theme shortly, but you can be sure that we won’t be shying away from the biggest issues the world faces today. We look forward to welcoming you in a few months time.
