“The undaunted freedom fighter” The Observer

Shami Chakrabarti is a prominent member of the British Labour Party, barrister, and human rights activist. She is well-known as the former director of Liberty, the organisation promoting civil liberties and human rights. Whilst holding this position, Shami campaigned against anti-terrorism legislation in the UK in the wake of 9/11, which she deemed excessive and antidemocratic. She contributes regularly to BBC Radio 4 and the British press, and was commended by the Times as “probably the most effective public affairs lobbyist of the past 20 years”.

Elsewhere, Shami served as Shadow Attorney General for England and Wales from 2016 to 2020, and was one of the panel members of the UK’s Leveson Inquiry into press standards in the early 2010s. Her first book, On Liberty, was published in 2014, and argues that government anti-terrorism policy in the 21st century threatens our democratic institutions and our rights.

"The fundamental values of a democracy cannot be changed because we are provoked by terrorists." Shami Chakrabarti
