Nancy Cartwright is a philosopher of science, and professor of philosophy at the University of California at San Diego and the University of Durham. She is identified with the “Stanford school” of philosophy of science, which places emphasis on scientific practice and shuns abstract theorising. Nancy's first book, How the Laws of Physics Lie, argues that the fundamental laws of physics do not explain the regularity found in nature.

Her recent work vaunts scientific evidence as a key factor in sensible policymaking, as outlined in Evidence Based Policy: A Practical Guide to Doing it Better.

“It's difficult to overstate the impact of Cartwright's research" Chair of the UC San Diego Department of Philosophy, Jonathan Cohen
