“Every human being, in a way, is a philosopher. Because that's what it is to be human.”
Hilary Lawson is a post-realist philosopher known for his theory of Closure and founder of the Institute of Art and Ideas which hosts the festival, HowTheLightGetsIn. His book Closure: A Theory of Everything is an attempt to offer a post-modern metaphysics. As a theory of everything it has dramatic consequences for how we understand ourselves, our society, our goals and our ability to achieve them.
Hilary is a critic of philosophical realism and of the analytic approach to philosophy prominent in many English speaking universities which he believes is outmoded. Through the Institute of Art and Ideas HowTheLightGetsIn, Hilary aims to put ideas at the centre of discussion and debate, and have people engage with the things that matter.
“Lawson shows himself to be a latter-day 'metaphysician' on the grand scale ... a quite astonishing achievement.” - Alan Montefiore, University of Oxford
