Barry Barnes is a sociologist who, as Professor of Sociology at the University of Exeter, co-founded the influential "strong programme", an approach to the sociology of scientific knowledge described by inheritors - including Bruno Latour - as "unparalleled" in its importance for the field.

Barnes is the author of Scientific Knowledge and Sociological Theory, a pioneering text in the study of science's sociological underpinnings.

"... Exercises the theory that our world is intelligible in terms of one set of true or uniquely reasonable beliefs" ~ Steven Lukes
