Ireland voted to get rid of its blasphemy laws and most applaud the new right to offend the Catholic Church. We also expect our press and our comedians to be viciously critical of our leaders. Yet to avoid giving offence, student campuses are insisting on no-platforming and safe spaces. Should we seek to eradicate offence as a means of creating a more tolerant and equal society? Or is offence vital to freedom and a critical means to contain the powerful?
