Lee Smolin is an American theoretical physicist, founding faculty member at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, adjunct professsor at the University of Waterloo and a member of the graduate faculty of the philosphy department at the University of Toronto. He received his PhD from Harvard in 1979 and since then has authored several books including 'Einstein's Unfinished Revolution', 'Time Reborn' and The Trouble with Physics'.

He is an outspoken critic of string theory describing it not as a 'trivial mistake' but as a 'deep' one. Additionally, he is the recipient of the Klopsteg Memorial Award (2009) Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2013) for the contributions that he has made to his field.
